It was a typically hot day when I was jogging yesterday. Near the end, a cool breeze had me praising and thanking God. Oddly enough I continued to praise Him for the sun whose heat continued to press upon me. Even though it was unbearably hot to me, I thought about how essential the heat and light were for the grass, trees, and other plants to grow.

Similarly for a Christian to grow, we must remain in Christ’s light. As we stand in the light of His word and presence our faith and capacity to love becomes stronger. Sometimes His light is uncomfortably intense as it reveals sin and weakness in us. We may even want to run from the light only to find that we can’t grow apart from it. But, if you are willing to stay in His light, He will send the clouds of His grace and mercy and the rains of His love and joy to refresh you more than you could ever find apart from Him.

“In the light of the king’s face is life,
And his favor is like a cloud of the latter rain.” Proverbs 16:15 (New King James Version)

“When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See, from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down:
Did e’re such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That we’re a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life,

My all.”
